Colombia Single Origin | Merlo Coffee

Colombia Single Origin - Rich, Rounded, and Full of Depth

Colombia is one of the most respected coffee origins in the world, and for good reason. This single origin is full-bodied and aromatic with a long, smooth finish, showcasing the quality that comes from generations of careful, small-scale farming.

From Colombia's smallholder farms

We source the Caturra varietal for this single origin, a natural mutation of the Bourbon plant first discovered in Brazil. The beans are hand-picked on smallholder family farms across Colombia, where coffee is deeply tied to the country's identity and every cherry is checked for ripeness before harvest.

In the cup you get dark chocolate, honey, and sweet cherry on the palate with an inviting fruity and sweet aroma. It has a bright acidity, good depth, and a long, smooth finish that lingers well after the last sip.

The Roaster's Profile

Flavour Dark Chocolate, Honey & Sweet Cherry
Aroma Fruity & Sweet
Finish Long & Smooth
Acidity Bright
Body Medium

Shines in a plunger, great across the board

Colombia works well across most brew methods, but it really comes into its own in a plunger where the depth and body have room to develop. It's also a strong choice for espresso and milk-based coffees, with the chocolate and cherry notes holding up well with milk.

Common Questions

1. How does this compare to the Brazil single origin?

Both are approachable single origins, but Colombia has more going on. It's fuller in body, has a brighter acidity, and the flavour profile is a bit more distinct with the cherry and honey notes. Brazil is milder and more straightforward. If you want something with a bit more character, Colombia is the one to try.

2. Is it good for milk-based coffees?

Yes. The dark chocolate and sweet cherry notes come through nicely with milk, making it a solid choice for lattes and flat whites. The body is substantial enough that it doesn't get lost when milk is added.
